BLURB
A lot has happened in Avery's life and it was only the start of it.
As Avery becomes more comfortable with her mates she learns not only more about herself but the world she now lives in. More questions arise and not enough answers.
With the selection and the Council hanging over their heads what will happen to Avery and her mates. What half-truths and twisted lies will she learn?
Disclaimer: This is a slow-slow burn Reverse Harem. The harem comes together throughout the books. Ends on a cliffhanger.
CHAPTER ONE
I groan and snuggle closer to the heat on my right side. I don't want to wake up yet. The warmth sinks down into my bones and wraps me in a safety I haven’t felt since dad.
I feel another tickle like touch on my nose trailing down to my lips and softly touching the back of my neck.
I shake my head and hear soft laughter. I tense as a nervous feeling bubbles in my gut.
My eyes pop open and all I see is dark washed jeans.
I tilt my head back; my hair falling away from my face and look into brilliant copper eyes.
"Hey." I smile and turn ten shades of red.
My head is on Dean's lap and my naughty arm is wrapped around Dean's hard belly underneath his shirt. Gods his skin is so warm and surprisingly soft for a guy. And smooth.
I slept on Dean. Oops.
"We're here," Kayden says softly.
I bit my lip and sit up.
Kayden leans over and pecks a kiss on my check as I rub the sleep from my eyes.
“I slept the whole time?" I mumble smiling a Kayden.
His eyes get this sparkle in them and he nods his head.
Well then.
I look out the window of the black jeep Jeff rented for us to drive.
My breath catches in my throat.
It's a freaking castle. I mean a real castle. It's old and gothic looking, tall and wide. Those pointing things look to be touching the clouds and with the mountains back in the distance. It's a breathtaking fairytale picture.
We're pulled into a gravel lot with more than a few different types of vehicles. And people. All kinds of people.
"It's a castle." I gasp looking wide-eyed at Dean and Kayden. "This selection thingy is at a castle. We're staying in a castle."
Wow. This is awesome. Who wouldn't want to spend three months living in a castle?
"Not exactly," Cam says from the front passenger seat.
My smile turns into a frown as I look out the windows again.
There are people everywhere. Some are getting bags out of their cars. There are a couple of guys throwing a football back and forth out to the side on the grass. Two girls walk up those huge stone steps. There are even people eating outside on the terrace.
I’m confused.
“We’re here just to check in and let the Council know we’re here,” Cam says looking out his window at the little girl picking wildflowers. His lips are puckered in thought.
“What is it?” Aden’s gruff voice comes from the driver seat.
“She’s an empath,” Cam says softly still watching the little girl.
I shift in my seat looking out at the little girl. She’s maybe eight or nine years old, dressed in a bright green summer dress with white, pink, and purple flowers clutched in her small hands.
“Isn’t she a little young to be here?” I mumble watching the little girl spin in a circle.
“Yeah, she is,” Cam says.
“Maybe it’s not what we’re thinking.” Nick sleepy filled voice rings out from behind me.
I don’t know what everyone's thinking but for me. I don’t have a very good feeling about this at all. The others said the Council takes empaths and forces em-bonds when they reach age fifteen, but seeing this little girl I can’t help but wonder and worry that they start taking them as soon as their empathic abilities start to show.
“Let's get this over with,” Aden says getting out.
We all follow suit leaving the jeep and following Aden up the wide stone steps.
“Are you okay?” I ask Dean lacing our fingers together. I felt his sadness in the jeep when we were talking about the little girl.
Dean smiles at me and nods his head; his hand squeezes mine.
I know he’s not okay. I can feel his guilt, but I don’t have a clue how to make him feel better. I know he blames himself for everything that has happened once he let the rage take him over.
“OMG!” A girl screeches making me jump and turn to the left.
“Kayden.” Her red lips bloom into a smile as she struts her way over to us.
I shift on my feet watching as she swings her hips in a too short blue jean shorts and a tank top the shows off her flat belly.
Her pale blond hair is piled messily on top of her head. Her brown eyes are locked onto Kayden standing to the right of me. I feel the tension coming off him in waves.
I do not like this girl.
My free hand curls into a fist, my nails biting into my palm as she throws her tan arms around Kayden’s neck. Her huge boobs getting ready to topple out of her low-cut top.
Kayden’s green eyes widen as he looks at me and removes her slim tanned arms from around his neck.
That doesn’t stop her, she saddles up to his left side. Wrapping one arm around his and trailing her manicured fingers down his chest.
“It’s been forever.” She purrs leaning into him.
And that’s it. The last straw. I don’t know what it is, but something pushes me forward. Saying her dirty hands should not be anywhere near him.
I snap moving forward, my hand lashes out grabbing her hair and jerking her away from him.
She squeals. Her hands going to mine in her hair. With more strength then I thought I had, I jerk her back and she lands on her ass with a thud.
“Mine.” I snarl out and see her own face morph into a snarl. Baring her teeth at me as I do the same to her.
She climbs to her feet, her eyes flashing yellow. I just dare her to do something as my sight comes into view and the ethereal ribbons of her emotions daring me to touch.
A laugh busts our tension.
I turn to Cam and Nick who’s both howling with laughter, hands on their knees.
“I can’t believe you did that.” Nick laughs hands on his hips.
A red haze clears from my mind and I can’t believe I did it either.
I give the guys a sheepish smile and move back towards Dean. Not looking at Kayden.
He pissed me off. He should've never let that fleabag touch him.
I feel Kayden come up behind me and when his arms wrap around my middle, I tense looking at Dean with his famous smirk gracing those lush lips.
Kayden lays his scruffy cheek against mine, “I’m sorry. I should have reacted faster.” He whispers in my ear. “She’s just a friend, I haven’t seen in a while.”
A loud gasp has me turning my head back to the girl. Her mouth is open, eyes wide staring at Kayden’s arms around me
. His thumb rubbing soothing circles right above the waistband of my jeans.
“Breanna, I would like to introduce you to Avery. My Mate.”
Kayden says never taking his arms from my body. His thumb doing crazy things to my insides.
A sneer forms on Breanna’s face. Her hands curl on her hips.
“Friends. Ha. Don’t let him lie to you. We shared a bed more times than I can count. And it wasn’t for sleeping.” She smiles and turns away going back to her group of friends looking in our direction, her hips shaking the whole time.
An ugly feeling blooms in my belly at her words and I shrug Kayden’s arms off me moving closer to Dean, using his body as a shield between me and Kayden.
I stand there not really seeing. I know me being upset about this is silly. Hearing Kayden has had a relationship with her has soured me. It’s completely irrational. I had a relationship before I met them. I didn’t except either of them not to have one either. But hearing it come from the girl's mouth it’s self is unsettling. It makes me feel uneasy.
I feel a tug bringing me out of my thoughts.
“Come on love,” Dean says.
We finish climbing up the stone steps with Kayden lagging behind. Guilt and worry eating up the bond between us.
CHAPTER TWO
I worry my lips following Cam and Aden into the Castle. Was I too harsh in my judging of Kayden? It’s not likes it’s his fault that thing wrapped herself around him like a damn octopus. We all have pasts.
I feel sick to my belly and look up, not being used to my feelings has my control over them lacking.
We’re in a huge lobby. The floors are red marble, the walls white with gold trim. There are people everywhere. Milling around off to the left at what looks to be a bar. There’s a group around our age sitting off to the bar entrance in black leather chairs.
I look around. What made that queasy feeling bubble up into my belly?
“What is it?” Kayden asks coming up beside me. I smile and take his hand. No longer being mad but still somewhat upset. The past is past.
“I don’t know. A weird feeling?” I mumble still looking around trailing behind Cam.
“Hello,” Nick says pulling my attention to the huge counter we stopped in front of.
Two girls and three guys stand behind the counter. White shirts and shining red vests. They match.
The redhead giggles out, fluttering her eyelashes, “Name.”
“Nick and Kayden Dirk.” He says leaning close.
The girl's cheeks tint pink and she drops her eyes down on the tablet she’s holding in her hands.
My heart sputters at hearing Kayden’s last name. Sweat beads on my forehead as I realize I know nothing about him.
I hear the click-click of buttons. She flips the tablet around and Nick lays his pointer finger on it.
There a beep and the girl smiles.
“Here you go.” She says handing him a red bag.
Kayden steps up and does the same thing, along with Aden, and Cam.
When it’s my turn her eyes narrow on my face. Why does that keep happening to me?
“Name.”
“Dean and Avery Blackwell.” Deans soft honey voice has the girl's eyes going wide. A sultry smile pulling at her slim lips.
I shift as she keeps staring at him. Is this going to be the main theme while we’re here? Girls looking at Kayden and Dean like they want to eat them and me being jealous because of it.
A nudge in my side has me looking up, the tablet is in front of me. I lay my finger on it and it beeps, taking my fingerprint.
I get the same red badge as the others. My name in big black block letters with a star at the end. She also hands me a gold skeleton key.
“Um, what’s the key for?”
“Your room.” She snaps.
I look at Kayden and see his eyes flash as I question, “I thought we weren’t staying here?”
“We’re not.”
The girl looks baffles. Her eyes flickering around our group.
“It says here Ms. Blackwell is staying on the grounds.”
“She’s not,” Dean says his voice turning hard.
Nick leans across the counter getting her attention.
“Who put in the order, sweetheart?” Nick smiles.
I hold back my snort. Sweetheart. Way to lay on the charm.
“Let me check.”
We all watch as her finger moves around the tablet.
“Lord Lorel.”
I move back, leaning into Kayden’s warmth. Lorel is wanting to separate me from everyone. It doesn’t leave a good feeling.
“There must have been some mistake. Avery will be staying with us and her mates.” Nick smiles again.
The girl's eyes go wide at the word mates.
“Mates?” She says confused.
“Yes.” Kayden barks dropping the key on the counter. It lands with a ting.
He turns me around and marches us out of the Castle lobby. I swear everyone’s eyes are on me the whole time.
Why would he do that?” I ask wringing my fingers.
We’re back in the jeep pulling away from the Castle before I find the strength to speak.
“Isn’t it obvious. He wants you.” Aden says.
Two piercing growls ring out into the tension-filled car.
Anger and jealousy flood my body. I shift leaning on Dean and placing my hand on Kayden’s thigh. The feelings slowly start to vanish, and I breathe easier.
“Is that why we’re staying somewhere else?” I ask.
I feel Dean’s breath on my neck, his nose trailing down the skin. I start to feel warm. Why does he do that at the most awkward times?
“Partly,” Cam says turning around. His eyes widen at Dean for a moment then he looks at me. “It’s also so we can work with your abilities without others watching.”
“Oh.” It comes out as a moan when Dean nips at my neck. I flush from embarrassment.
“Will you guys stop,” Nick grumbles.
I feel a light kiss on the spot where Dean nipped me.
“It’s hard to stop,” Kayden says looking straight at me.
Uh.
“She’s in heat,” Dean mumbles his arm snaking around my waist.
What!? Heat? What does that mean? I’m not a damn dog. My face floods with blood.
“We didn’t need to know that.” Cam squeaks.
“What does that mean?” I whisper harshly, embarrassed.
Kayden just looks at me, his hand lazily moving up and down my leg.
“It’s your body’s way of telling us you're ready to mate.”
“But I’m not a wolf.” I screech. “And I’m not ready!”
“No, but you're mated to two. Our blood now runs in your veins and yours in ours. You’ll take some characteristics of our wolves.”
My heart starts going ninety miles an hour. My chest feels tight. Oh my gosh. Mate. Like in. No not going to think about it. Not now with everyone in the car. Am I going to start sprouting fur now? Claws!
“We here.” Cam yelps getting out of the car.
“Thank the lords,” Nick says getting out also.
“Let’s not talk about this right now,” I mumble not looking at either of them as I pull away from Dean and climb over Kayden getting out of the car as fast as possible.
I take in deep breaths of air trying to calm my racing heart. Can I really do this? Sex. Is normal. So, why am I having a freak out about it? Why is it bothering me so damn bad?
CHAPTER THREE
I sit down on the grass. My hands in my hair. I’m freaking out. My chest hurts. My breathing is coming way too fast. How can this upset me so much? Do other people feel this way or is it just me? Am I the oddball?
Mate. Sex. I gasp. I can hardly say the word in my thoughts never mind doing the deed. I feel like crying. Why? I just don’t understand what’s so scary about this. People do it all the time and yet I’m in full-blown panic attack.
My breathing stops. I’m goin
g to shut it out. Make everything stop. That’s what I will do because I can’t handle this anymore.
“Hey. Hey!” Cam’s soft voice drowns out my beating pulse.
“It’s alright. Avery, it’s alright.” He says soothingly, rubbing small circles on my back.
“Your fine, okay? Everything is fine. Just take deep breaths. Breathe with me. In out. In out. In out.”
In out. In out. In out.
I look up into Cam’s warm brown eyes, “What’s wrong with me?” I sputter.
This isn’t normal.
Cam’s eyes flick over my face, “It’s you being in heat. It makes everything more intense.”
What? No. I don’t need this. Everything is already intense. I already feel things more strongly than normal. I don’t want something making it worse.
Cam scoots back and I feel strong arms wrap around my waist from behind me.
“We’re sorry.” Kayden says softly resting his chin on top of my head, “We should have controlled our wolves better.”
My own hands come up and clutch at Kayden’s arms. My nails digging into his tan skin.
“How long will this last?” I gasp, digging my nails in deeper.
“Three days at the. It will be alright. We’ll try to do better.”
Now I feel bad. Do better? They didn’t even really do anything wrong. Just acting on their instincts. I’m the psycho one. Freaking out over a few words.
I feel a calming blanket wrap around me. Caging me in with warmth and love. My breathing comes easier. My heart slows to a normal beat.
He makes it better. They both do.
“Yeah, alright. I’m fine.” I say letting Dean pull me up off the ground.
I wipe the stray tears from my cheek. “I’m sorry,” I mumbled looking down at the ground.
A pale fingertips my chin back. A soft smile on plump lips is the first thing I see, and my heart melts a little. Dean’s first real smile. Not that cocky smirk he sports all the time. It’s so sweet and wholesome.
“You did nothing wrong love.” He says looking me in the eyes.
